Each year, the University of Melbourne, Australia, awards the Melbourne International Research Scholarship (MIRS) to international students for study at the Bachelor's, Master's and PhD levels. Approximately 600 scholarships are awarded in all fields of study.

About the Melbourne International Scholarship:

The Melbourne Research Scholarship (MRS) was established by the University of Melbourne and is awarded to high-achieving national and international research students.

Since 2016, the Melbourne International Research Scholarship (MIRS) has been part of the Melbourne Research Scholarship program.

Eligibility for the Melbourne International Research Scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship, the applicant must:
  • Have applied for and met the entry requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne, or
  • Be currently enrolled in a research program at the University of Melbourne.

Selection Criteria for the Melbourne International Fellowship:

Melbourne Research Fellowships are awarded on the basis of academic merit. Eligible applicants are scored and ranked based on their academic achievement of their most recent degree and their research potential in their field of study. Factors such as relevant professional experience, refereed publications, specialized medical qualifications or original music composition may be considered.

Number of Melbourne International Scholarships:

The University awards approximately 600 scholarships per year.

Value of the Melbourne International Scholarship:

100% fee remission and up to $110,000 stipend.

Duration of the Melbourne International Fellowship:

The duration of the Melbourne Fellowship is two years for students undertaking a Master's degree by research degree and up to 4 years, for students undertaking a PhD by research degree.

How to apply for the Melbourne International Scholarships:

  • If you are a new student and have applied for a graduate research course by the application closing date, you will automatically be considered for the research scholarships.
  • If you have accepted a course offer and have deferred to be reconsidered at a later date, you must submit a new online application form by October 31 to be considered for the following year.
  • If you are currently enrolled in a graduate research course for which you are seeking an award, you must submit an online application by October 31 to be considered for an award the following year. 
You will receive notification that a scholarship application has been added to your file within seven days of submitting the online form.
